Watering Requirements
Hydrangeas love water, so newly planted shrubs need frequent watering, often 2-3 times a week or daily in hot weather to establish strong roots, while established in-ground plants only need a deep soaking 1-2 times a week. Containers always dry out faster and require daily checking, often needing a thorough watering almost every single day during the summer heat. Water containers thoroughly until water seeps out the drainage holes to ensure roots deep in the container get watered. Always water deeply at the base to keep leaves dry and prevent disease!
Sunlight Requirements
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Unlike most other hydrangeas, panicle hydrangeas are highly sun tolerant and can flourish in full sun in northern climates. In hotter southern climates, they appreciate a little more protection, preferably morning sun and afternoon shade.
Humidity Requirements
Prefers moderate to high humidity. Hydrangea thrive in coastal or naturally humid environments, but if you live in a very arid, dry climate, they will need extra afternoon shade and a thick layer of mulch to keep the surrounding air and soil from drying out too fast.

When and how do you prune a Dragon Baby Hydrangea?

No, Dragon Baby is bred specifically with strong, sturdy stems that hold its heavy flower panicles upright! Unlike older panicle varieties that bend under rain-soaked blooms, Dragon Baby features thick reddish-brown stems that resist flopping. To maintain these strong stems, ensure the plant receives at least 4-6 hours of sun daily and prune back by one-third each spring.
How far apart should you plant Dragon Baby Hydrangeas?
A standard Limelight grows 6-8 feet tall and wide. Planting them 5-6 feet apart center-to-center creates a continuous privacy hedge, or 8+ feet apart if you desire standalone specimen shrubs.
Why is my healthy-looking hydrangea not blooming?
If your hydrangea is all leaves and no flowers, the most common culprits are sun exposure, over-watering, or over-fertilizing. Depending on your region, these plants thrive best in morning sun with dappled afternoon shade, as intense full sun can get too hot for buds to form. Additionally, giving them too much water or fertilizer will actually stunt bloom production. Instead, aim to keep the soil moist but never soggy, and stick to just one application of fertilizer in the spring or early summer.
