Depending on your region, these plants thrive best in morning sun with dappled afternoon shade, as intense full sun can get too hot for buds to form. Additionally, giving them too much water or fertilizer will actually stunt bloom production. Instead, aim to keep the soil moist but never soggy, and stick to just one application of fertilizer in the spring or early summer.Unlike standard varieties that shift from pink to blue, the Cherry-Go-Round® is specially bred to showcase a spectacular, deep cherry-red hue. That said, soil pH can still adjust the hue for its intensity! In acidic soil (pH below 6.0), those bloom clusters will actually deepen into an even darker, ultra-rich maroon-red, while alkaline soil keeps them a bright, classic maraschino red.
How does the Cherry-Go-Round Hydrangea rebloom all season?
Most hydrangeas only form buds on "old wood" (last year's stems). The Cherry-Go-Round® is wonderful because they bloom on both old wood and "new wood" (the current season's fresh growth). This unique trait ensures a continuous cycle of new flowers from late spring all the way until the first fall frost.
How far apart should I space Cherry-Go-Round Hydrangeas when planting?
Since this is a petite variety that reaches just 2-3 feet tall and wide, it is incredibly easy to fit into tight spaces. For a tight, low garden hedge, space your plants about 2 to 2.5 feet apart from the center of each shrub so they grow closer together.If you want them to grow as distinct, individual accent bushes, give them a bit more breathing room by spacing them 3-5 feet apart depending on your design goals.
When is the best time to prune a Cherry-Go-Round Hydrangea?
You actually do not need to prune them down to the base in the fall or winter; doing so removes the buds meant for early spring flowers. The best practice is to leave the stems alone through the winter. In mid-spring, wait until the plant begins to leaf out, then only snip off the dead, brittle wood that shows no signs of green growth.
